If you're planning a journey through Northern Thailand, don't make the mistake of rushing past Lampang. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, Lampang is a city that rewards those who take the time to explore it.

As part of our own adventure, Kung and I travelled from Chiang Mai to Lampang before continuing our journey on to Chiang Rai. It was the perfect route, allowing us to experience three very different sides of Northern Thailand. Each destination had its own character, but Lampang stood out for its relaxed pace, friendly atmosphere and authentic Thai charm.

Lampang has a fascinating history that stretches back more than 1,300 years. Once part of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, the city became an important centre for trade, particularly during the teak industry boom in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Today, many of the beautiful teak houses still remain, giving visitors a glimpse into its prosperous past.

One of Lampang's most famous sights is its traditional horse-drawn carriages. While they were once a common form of transport, today they have become a symbol of the city and offer visitors a unique way to explore the old streets and historic landmarks.

The city is also home to some stunning temples, including the magnificent Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, one of the finest examples of Lanna architecture in Thailand. Walking through its peaceful grounds is like stepping back in time.

Of course, no visit would be complete without enjoying the local food. Lampang has an excellent selection of cafés, restaurants and street food stalls, serving everything from traditional Northern Thai dishes to modern Thai cuisine. It's the sort of place where you can sit back with a coffee, watch the world go by and simply enjoy the slower pace of life.

For us, Lampang became one of those places that quietly leaves a lasting impression. It may not attract the same crowds as Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, but that's exactly what makes it so special. It's authentic, welcoming and full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

If you're travelling through Northern Thailand, consider following the same route we did—Chiang Mai to Lampang, then on to Chiang Rai. It's a journey filled with beautiful scenery, rich history and unforgettable experiences that truly showcase the heart of the old Lanna Kingdom.
