In my latest episode of All About Thailand, I took you right into the heart of Bangkok on one of the most meaningful nights in the Buddhist calendar: Makha Bucha Day. This episode was all about slowing down, stepping into the spiritual rhythm of Thailand, and experiencing a festival that blends history, devotion, and a sense of calm that truly defines Thai culture.
Makha Bucha is one of those days where the entire atmosphere of the country seems to shift. As dusk approaches, temples across Bangkok begin to glow. Candlelight flickers under golden chedis, monks prepare for evening chanting, and families come together to make merit. In the podcast, I guided you through this remarkable scene — the soft sound of prayers, the serene processions, and the peaceful feeling that settles over the capital.
I also shared the origins of Makha Bucha: the sacred moment when 1,250 fully enlightened disciples gathered around the Buddha without any prior arrangement, each ordained directly by him. It’s a powerful story, one that sits at the very heart of Buddhist tradition and still moves people across Thailand today.

Bangkok’s temples — from Wat Saket to Wat Arun — become the centre of devotion on this night. Listeners heard about the wian thian candle procession, where Thai people walk around the main chedi three times, holding candles, flowers, and incense. It’s a ritual filled with symbolism and one that creates a connection between past and present.
But Makha Bucha isn’t only about the big temples. As I mentioned in the episode, out in the villages, especially in the northeast, the celebrations carry a different kind of warmth — familiar faces, family gatherings, and a community spirit that makes the day feel deeply personal.
Whether you’re in Bangkok or in a quiet corner of rural Thailand, Makha Bucha is a reminder of the country’s spiritual heartbeat. And that’s exactly what this episode set out to capture.

If you haven’t had a chance to listen yet, I invite you to join me for this peaceful and reflective journey through one of Thailand’s most meaningful traditions.
